“Luke” Chai Zhi Tao

Luke was four years old, watching his father work on the new three wheeled truck he had just bought. His mother was helping by handing his father the tools. As he watched, the bricks holding up the truck collapsed and crushed both his mother and father to death.

This accident was the end of the source of income and livelihood for the entire family. He lived with his semi healthy Grandmother and a Grandfather who has a bad heart condition. The family needed food badly. The Grandfather heard there was work in southern China, so he went south to find work, but when he got there his heart condition was so bad he had to be hospitalized. He had been gone for 3 months when we found Luke, and there was not much hope he would ever come back.

During the interview the grandmother brought out a picture of her son and daughter in law. At one point, little Luke held the picture and pointed to his parents.
